What fun things are there to do in December in San Francisco?

Im going from the 13-18th of December with my boyfriend. We stayed at the wharf pretty much the whole time. Where else can we go? We went in February and it was pretty cold. Should we expect same weather like in February? I want to know what kind of clothes to pack! Thanks in advance!!What fun things are there to do in December in San Francisco?
okay, do you like musicals?Well, There's a really great one going on until Dec. 20th. Jersey Boys is playing in the Curran Theatre, just a few blocks away from Union Square(SHOPPING!) Well, anyway, even if you're not crazy about musicals, you'll love this one! It includes Franky Valli's hit Can't Take My Eyes Off of You. It's reallly great and tickets are starting at about 35 dollars. (I'm going early december to watch it for the second time)

There are alot of things you can do. I really recommend the restaurant The Cheesecake Factory in the Macy's buidling at the Union Square. Get there early, because it gets packed and I don' thinkt hey take reservations.

There's also Pier 39, The Golden Gate Bridge, Well, there's really a TON of stuff. You'll really enjoy yourself, it's my favorite city(I live about 1.5 hours away) If you have any questions just feel free to e-mail me!

As far as the weater is concerned, it gets chilly, but bearable. Pack a few coats, and no open toed shoes. It is actaully somewhat pleasant considering it'll be December.

Ride the street cars up and down the hills !
I spent more than half a year in SF - what follows is not specific for December (I was never in SF in Dec.). There are hundreds of large mural paintings in the Mission district which I guess most people don't even know about. Here are some photos I have taken:

http://www.geocities.com/bjorn_cedervall/murals.html

Many of the murals can be found between 16th St. and 24th St. I suggest a burrito stop at La Cumbra (Valencia x Mission 16th). Head in the direction of Florida St. x Mission 24th - it doesn't matter so much what exact streets you take for seeing murals but some of the streets are somewhat worn down (but often with very colorful houses).

On Hyde St. (near Fisherman's wharf) - if you walk up (!) a few hundred yds from the pier area (follow cable car track but on sidewalk!) you will find the Norwegian Seaman's Church (Nordic flags on the porch) where you can stop for a cup of tea/coffee + wafers (great!) + rest and have a fantastic view toward the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz etc. Follow Hyde St. another 100 yds or so and you are at Lombard St. (read about it elsewhere!) - after getting your photos there you can take a cable car down to the Union Sq. area and then do China Town (Grant St.) etc.

Personally I like the Golden Gate (Botanical) Park a lot. You have the de Young Museum there which provides an excellent view over San Francisco.

Be careful even daytime (good that there are two of you) - some areas are not so good like the Tenderloin, Market St. x roughly 4th-7th St., Ashbury-Heights and other places. Be streetsmart (jeans, sneakers type of outfit) - not too much of map reading on the streets etc.

Walking and public transportation is best in the city of SF. The BART system takes you longer distances like to Berkeley (I am pretty sure that the BART works from the SF Intl. airport nowadays - most of my time in SF was 13 years ago but I had half a dozen of revisits after that including a week in 2006).

If you have a car - 2-3 hours driving south takes you to the John Steinbeck area and the Monterey Aquarium - very nice with sea otters and other fun. What fun things are there to do in December in San Francisco?
I would definitly go to Union Square, and check out the christmas tree there. They have it specially trucked in, and let me tell you it is HUGE! The christmas balls that are hanging off it are bigger than my head!

Also duck inside the St. Francis, also @ union square, and check out the gingerbread house they have made. Again, it is breathtaking.

Take a walk up Market Street, start at the wharf and walk up from there. There is so much spirit! Sidewalk performers, shops. Even a starbucks is on the way if you want to get some coffee.

Once at union square, check out the above mentioned attractions, and don't forget to give the lady holding the sign that says "free hugs" a hug. It is going to be the christmas season! Hope you have a great time :)
Buy pot on Haight St, get drunk in the Mission, say "hella" and "chill" a lot... ugh!

The weather isn't freakishly cold... highs in the low 50s-ish, lows in the low 40s-ish. December and January are the most rainy months, though.

The wharf is boring except late at night when no one's around and the sea lions are really active. Stay away from it.

The Richmond district, around Geary and Clement, between about Arguello and 25th ave is really cool... lots of cheap dim sum and Russian bakeries, as well as Russian and Chinese grocery stores, etc... Everything's cheap and half the people don't speak English. It's lovely. And Gaspare's at 19th and Geary has the best pizza ever.

The Mission has some really cool murals and graffiti art... just walk around and you'll find stuff. Also lots of good thrift stores and taquerias.

Market St. (particularly around Market and 6th) in the middle of the night is really rad... crack addicts, tranny prostitutes, creepy guys hanging outside of porn shops, hipsters heading home from bars in SOMA, etc... Lovely.

Land's End park is beautiful... lots of trails, pretty views. Foxes and coyotes roaming about if you're lucky, but they've been few and far between since they started doing construction on the south-western end.

Lots of nice cafes and bookstores and the lot along Polk St and Fillmore St.

The Castro has lots of good restaurants and gay men with awesome fashion sense. Also has some good (albeit expensive) clothing stores.

The Lower Haight is hipster central and has a lot of cute independent clothing stores, cafes, bars, etc... Cafe International is wonderful, especially the open mic on Friday nights. The Upper Haight is burn-out/neo-hippie/other hipster central, has lots of crappy tourist nostalgia shops, but also Amoeba which is the best record store ever, and some really good (albeit expensive) thrift stores and vintage clothing stores (Buffalo Exchange and Held Over are really good and sometimes reasonably priced, Decades of Fashion and La Rosa have the best clothes EVER but are freakishly expensive).

Um... Union Square has mostly mall-esque stores that you can find anywhere else in the country. It's nothing special... though it WILL be very decorated for the holidays, so might be pretty for a quick visit.

North Beach has lots of Italian restaurants, a really pretty Catholic church with a statue of St. Lucy, City Lights bookstore, etc... Some good clothing stores, too. Lots of gay and gay-esque Italian men in tinted glasses and old jazz men selling cheaply made books of their own beat-style poetry.

The Tenderloin and Market St. are kinda seedy (crack addicts, tranny prostitutes, etc...) but are perfectly safe. Even in the middle of the night. A lot of art school kids live there, too. Very little violent crime... some muggings, but nothing more. Just don't wear a fanny pack or anything making you an easy target for a mugging and you'll be totally fine (violent crime is VERY rare there). The only neighborhoods you really need to watch out for are Bayview/Hunter's point (at the south-eastern part of the city), Ingleside (at the south-western part of the city), and the projects immediately around Eddy/Laguna in the Western Addition. And even those are better than the bad areas in most cities.

Etc...What fun things are there to do in December in San Francisco?
OK, I agree with pretty much everything everyone has said, except one thing - if you want good food - DO NOT go to the Cheesecake Factory. This is a chain that serves a lot of mediocre food. There is so much great food in SF, please do not go there. (Nobody who lives in SF would ever go there.)

I definitely think you should check out the murals in the Mission District. The Mission is also one of the warmest neighborhoods in SF, so in December you will be glad to be there. Plus, there are a ton of great bars in the Mission - especially around the area of 16th St. and Valencia. For a map of the murals, you can go to Precita Eyes Mural Center at 2981 24th Street, not far from the 24th St. BART station. (The neighborhood looks a little grungy, but I think the murals are worth it.) I think they may also have info on their web site.

The tree in Union Square is really great too.

For food, I would pick up a Zagat guide. I don't want to make any specific recommendations, because I don't know your preferences, budget, etc., but you will find something great for sure.

Have fun!
It'll probably be cold in February. Hooded sweatshirts, Beanies, Turtlenecks, long pants, scarves, warm jackets or coats. Dress in layers.

Find a hotel with kitchenette or with microwave %26amp; refrigerator. Go to the local markets (deli counters etc.) and purchase %26amp; make some of your own meals.

Splurge and try to get a hotel in the Union Square area because that is the height of the Christmas shopping season.

Others have given you superb fun suggestions that you requested and I just wanted to add some info.
