My family and I are traveling to San Francisco in March. We'll definitely go see Lombard St., Fishermans' Wharf and City Lights but what are some other must-see attractions or better yet, cool places that are not touristy? I am big fan of beat literature so any cafes or anywhere the stereotypical Bay Area writers hung out would be cool. We just want some suggestions that might not be found in every tourist guide or whatever.
Bars or restaurants or shops or anything potentially off-the-map or just somewhere awesome that locals frequent would be cool. We're all 21+.
Thanks! What are some non-touristy or unusual things to do in San Francisco?

Well given your interests, Vesuvio Cafe is a must. Jack Kerouac hung out there and drank after all. http://www.vesuvio.com
Not far away is the San Francisco Art Institute. Visit during a weekday and its cafe is a good place for lunch and has a great view of Alcatraz. The school also has a large Diego Rivera mural. http://www.sfai.edu
The ruins of the Sutro Baths are awesome to explore. It's a little off the beaten path, but worth the effort.
