Living in San Francisco in this economy?

I was chatting with one of my relatives who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and she told me that things are really bad out there. She told me that there is massive unemployent, most commercial buildings are empty, and that government workers are losing their jobs (teachers, police, ect.)

Just a few years ago it seems as though the Bay Area was the place to be and that things were not bad at all. How bad is the economy right now and do people still consider it a great place to live considering all of the difficulties right now?Living in San Francisco in this economy?
It is a great place to live except for jobs. The city of San Francisco has more social services than the rest of the bay area. You can live way out of town and find a cheaper rental but it is expensive to commute into the city. In Calif. the real estate values are much higher than everywhere so even rentals are high, gasoline is high, food is high, sales tax is very high. Other than those drawbacks, it is beautiful, the air is clean and public transit very good. But there is more crime now due to lack of jobs.Living in San Francisco in this economy?
I live 15 minutes away from San Francisco, and things here are pretty good, there is still unemployment, but i notice that things are not that bad with the people. People are still able to take a good vacation, eat out, shop, and do normal things. In the city, things are worse, there is a lot of crime and i hear on the news a lot that a lot of people are getting fired.Living in San Francisco in this economy?
My BF has lived there his whole life and the only reason we are not living there right now is the high cost of living and horrible CA economy.

We are paying less than $500 right now for a 1 bedroom in a cool town, why would we move?
