Are people less friendly in San Francisco than the Midwest?

I moved to San Francisco from Ohio. One of the first things I noticed is that people in SF are less friendly to each other- people here don't smile at each other or talk to other people who they don't know. I even tried smiling at a few people as I walked by and they wouldn't even make eye contact with me?

Am I crazy or do you agree that people are less friendly here? Are people less friendly in San Francisco than the Midwest?
Yes, you are right, people in SF are very rude. I lived there for over 20 years and finally I couldn't take it anymore and had to move out.Are people less friendly in San Francisco than the Midwest?
It's not about it being San Francisco, as much as it is about being a big city. You'd get the same sort of behavior in Chicago or New York. In cities, people tend not to be as social toward strangers. There's just so many of them. Are people less friendly in San Francisco than the Midwest?
Where in Ohio? I lived in Fresno before moving to Cincinnati.

While I don't believe it's a conscious rudeness in the Midwest, it's here, it's pervasive, and it's rather blunt.

If you're a recent transplant, people in San Francisco might've mistaken you for a tourist. And nobody likes those. Are people less friendly in San Francisco than the Midwest?
I never found that problem. I notice whenever I walk to the bus stop in the morning I always get smiles and hellos. Maybe its the district you live in.
in general, cities are less friendly than rural areas or the suburbs. i think it's more about that.
