What to do in San Francisco and/or Monterey, CA? Sightseeing? Walking Tour?

A couple of friends and I are planning on going to San Francisco or Monterey over the weekend, but we all are low on money, so what would be some cool free things to do in the two cities? Or what would be the cheapest things to do? Also I want to know where the best views are in both cities. I heard something about Monterey having some great beach views. What to do in San Francisco and/or Monterey, CA? Sightseeing? Walking Tour?
Cheap things to do in San Fran:

Paddle boats or rent bicycles at Stowe Lake in GG Park.

Ride Bicycle across GG Bridge (lots of places rent bikes over by Pier 39 and Ghiradelli Square).

Window shop at Union Square or WestGate mall by Powell Street BART station.

Go to the beach.

Land's End (over by Legion of Honor Museum) has great views of GG Bridge.

Carnelian Room (bar at top of BofA Bldg downtown) has great views of city.

Monterey:

Monarch butterflies should be nesting in Pacific Grove for next 2-3 months:

Monterey Bay Aquarium (OK, not that cheap but worth it for one time).

Hello!

I work at the Monterey Visitor's Center and I have a couple recomendations for your time in Monterey. The activities will depend on how long you have to spend in the area. We have so much to offer. If you wanted to spend some time outdoors, I would recomend walking or biking the recreation trail that runs along the ocean from Pacific Grove all the way up to Marina. We also have the Point Lobos State Reserve Park that boast many easy walking trails right on the ocean as well.

As previously mentioned, we do have our Old Fisherman's Warf. It is much smaller than the one in San Francisco. I would also suggest visiting Cannery Row and the Aquarium if you have time. Pacific Grove is home to the oldest operating lighthouse on the west coast. It is call Point Pinos Lighthouse and is open Thursday-Monday 1pm-4pm. You can also take a drive through the golf courses on 17-mile drive. This will lead you right to Carmel-by-the-Sea. This is a very cute romantic little town with a bounty of small shops and hundreds of art galleries. It is also home to one of the California Missions. We also have our own wine country out in Carmel Valley. I hope all this information helped. I would encourage you to visit our website at www.seemonterey.com It should help you narrow down what activites you have time for. I hope you have a great trip! What to do in San Francisco and/or Monterey, CA? Sightseeing? Walking Tour?

There are some nice sand dunes in the town of Marina, just north of Monterey. These would certainly be worth a look. And Monterey has its own Fisherman's Wharf, scaled down quite a bit from San Francisco.
