Try the places to eat question on SF dining out, but let people know what kind of food you dislike and your budget, that info helps a lot!

Dive Bars

Rt 101 is a friendly little dive bar on Van Ness between Pine and Bush.

Cheap drinks and a hot dog with a bunch of great folks who work in the neighborhood at Dave's on Third and Market. Too old school to have a website

Tempest behind the chronicle building at 5th Mission in the alleys at Mary and Natoma

Annie's Social Club Dance floor in the front, Karaoke in the back and a photo booth and pool table...what's not to like?

Dive bars with food

Zeitgeist at Valencia Dubose or 14th. A garden out back, the tamale lady, and loads of bikers [motor powered or not].

Part Sports Bar, part piano lounge, part hoffbrau, all local color and all fun at Lefty O'Douls on Geary at Powell

Tommy's Joint on Van Ness at Geary an old style SF houfbrau, they serve such unique dishes as buffalo chili over rice and the meatball sandwich is the bomb. The pictures of San Francisco all over the walls are a history lesson. Nothing fancy but filling and welcoming.

Trivia Night, live music or listen to poetry on the once a year Robert Burns night at Edinburgh Castle. Drink a pint or six and then soak up the booze with some Fish %26amp; Chips brought in from Old chelsea fish and chips. A bit of Scotland in SF!

I personally would not want to stay in the Fisherman's Wharf or Marina as they are kind of out of the way to the city center.

For your first visit Union Square is probably the best place to stay. There are lots of good restaurants, shops, theaters and clubs in the Union Square area. It is centrally located with lots of public transportation options and within walking distance of most of the tourist areas.

Driving in the city can be confusing for visitors and parking is difficult and expensive so forgoing the rental car is a good idea. Muni offers multi day passes that are good for buses, trolley, light rail and the cable cars [unique experience but $5 per ride].

Joie de Vivre http://www.jdvhotels.com has several hotels in the Union Square area in different price points. Each hotel is unique and they have a cool free program where they match you with a local person, called a Golden Gate Greeter, who shares your interests to spend a few hours with you and familiarize yourself with the city. http://www.goldengategreeter.c...

Ok lets see,

Fisherman's Wharf, pier 39 and Ghiradeli Square. You can get there by the Powell street cable car. but before you go you can shop at Union Square and San Francisco centre., Take a ferry to Alcatraz Prison, a very interesting tour. (dress warm and wear comfortable shoes) You also have coit tower china town and The Golden Gate bridge, Go to the cliff house for lunch and drive through Golden Gate Park. Drive down the worlds crookedest street, Lombard and check out Cobb's comedy club in North Beach. You can also take a ferry to beautiful saucilito. If the Giants are in town, take in a ball game at AT%26amp;T park. and much much more. Take the full city tour by double decker Bus. For A Hotel, check out the Marriott at 4th and Mission or the Hyatt regencey on Californina street. There are of Ton of dive bars in the alleys of downtown or in the Haight Ashbury district. Avoid the tenderloin. Restarants are to numerous to list. Heres a site.
