Best way for tourists to get around/things to do in San Francisco?

Going to San Francisco with some friends in October for 4 days

We're all from Australia, we'd like to see all the usual touristy things (Alcatraz, Haight Ashbury, Golden Gate Bridge etc), but any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

We've seen many advertisements for tours and hop on hop off buses, but is there a better way to get around?Best way for tourists to get around/things to do in San Francisco?
the best thing to do is take local transit. you can get a multi-day bus pass pretty cheap, and it gets you everywhere except alcatraz and other ferries. buy alcatraz tix b/4 you come or it will be sold out

Sf people are pretty friendly but you can get bus routes from 511.org any time. Also info on buying multi-day muni passes on there too

suggestions for stuff to do:

Chinatown - try Dim sum

Tour of AT%26amp;T Park

North Beach - old Italian Section

Visit Coit Tower

Walk/Drive down Lombard Street

Golden Gate Park - De Young Museum and Conservatory of Flowers

Ferry Building (Located at the Embarcadero)

The Metreon

Cable car rides

MOMA

Haight-Ashbury

walk/bike across golden gate bridge

A ferry ride to Sausalito or Tiburon would be a great add.You can actually bike across the bridge and take the sausalito ferry back into the city.

If you like Shopping, San Francisco Centre and Union Square is a must

Restaurants:

Lunches- Farmers Market (at the Ferry Building), Mission (La Cumbre, El Toro, or La Tacqueria), Swan Oyster Depot, Mitchell's Ice Cream. You can also get decent food in the basement of San Francisco Centre.

Possible Dinners: Slanted Door, Zuni, Foreign Cinema, Boulevard, Chow, or for a special but very pricey treat, Gary Danko!

Eh, buying into a tour or the hop on/off tour buses is pretty lame. Did that the first time and thought SF was a tourist trap. The next time, I just purchased a 3-day trolley ticket to get around and used the MUNI for anywhere else. No stupid narration, no set times, no Alcatraz and Pier 39 (by the way, avoid both of those . . .).

I also took the commuter boat from SF over to Sausalito (the little town opposite SF, right next to the Golden Gate Bridge) for a day trip and loved it.Best way for tourists to get around/things to do in San Francisco?
If visiting the top attractions in my lovely city is your goal, then drop by the SFVCB(visitors and convention bureau) in the Powell St. BART station where they have maps and brochures and a few(not all) friendly employees.

You can rent an electric car equipped with earphones.

There is a double decked bus that traverses the main parts of the city with on/off privileges.

Get more info at the SFVCB and enjoy one of the loveliest walking cities in the USA!Best way for tourists to get around/things to do in San Francisco?
I recommend the same stuff they have said above

also I did this and loved it,

Go to Fisherman's Wharf (Take cable car Powell-Mason)

and at the last stop walk all the the way down til you see the fisherman wharf;s sign and make a left

Keep goign until you see a place hwere they rent bycicles

theyll give you a map and explain everything to you , and with the path they're gonna shwo you you can ride the bike

all the way until golden gate

BEST RIDE ever the sightseeings are beautiful! and you get to ride all the way over the golden gate bridge

Also if you are here by October 4th you MUST go to the LOVE FEST

you can find info here about that: http://www.sflovefest.org/

hope this helps!
