California road trip from San Francisco to San Diego. Any suggestions on things to do/places to see?

My best friend and I are going to California for 6 days. We are thinking of going on a road trip from San Francisco to San Diego (or vice versa). It's our first time in California.. What are some things to do, and places to see? What cities should we spend more time in? Beaches? Nightlife? Sites? Thanks for all your suggestions/advice :)California road trip from San Francisco to San Diego. Any suggestions on things to do/places to see?
wow, you have an awesome trip ahead of you!

well you can easily spend about 2 days in San Francisco alone visiting all the sites; Fishermen's Warf, Pier 39, Chinatown, The Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, etc

when you drive down from Frisco to LA County (you have to pass LA County to get to San Diego) you may want to travel down Highway 1 along the coast, you'll see amazing scenery along Big Sur, Cambria, Morro Bay, Monterrey Bay, and you may want to go see Hearst Castle in Cambria, San Luis Obispo Mission, and traveling south on Highway 1 you'll eventually meet with the 101 freeway north of Santa Barbara where you can go and visit several places like Mission Santa Barbara, and go into the countryside into Santa Ynez valley where you can go into Solvang and the Chumash Casino and maybe even drive up to Neverland Ranch (Michael Jackson's home), Soledad Mission

or (if you like the heat) you can drive to Sacramento, California's Capital, from Frisco along highway 80 and then travel south along the 5 freeway through the San Joaquin Valley and travel east to Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon National Parks!

or keep traveling east on highway 80 to Reno, Nevada, and then travel south on Highway 395 to Lake Tahoe and see some of the old gold rush towns along the Nevada/California border like Carson City, and you can even enter Yosemite through highway 395 along the Tioga Pass, further south on 395 you can visit Mono Lake and see the Tufa mounds, and Manzanar Japanese Interment Camp, see Mt. Whitney (The tallest mountain in the lower 48 states) and even go into Mammoth Lakes, further south you'll come to highway 14 through the Mojave Desert where you can go west through Lancaster and Palmdale, passing Edwards AFB where the shuttle lands, and into LA County where the 14 freeway meets with the 5 freeway in Santa Clarita, there you can go to 6 Flags Magic Mountain, or keep going south on 395 to highway 58 to highway 40 and go to Las Vegas!! Froom Vegas there are many highways traveling through the Nevada/Arizona/California/Mexico border where you can travel along the southern part of the Mojave desert and come in through eastern San Diego!

While in LA you can do tons of stuff too, like going to Hollywood, Chinatown, Olvera St, San Pedro, Long Beach, Redondo Beach, Venice Beach, Santa Monica

OC has some places to visit on your way to San Diego like San Juan Capistrano Mission

San Diego: Sea World, the Zoo, the Wild Animal Park, Gas Light District, Coronado, and Mexico!!

Just have fun, and if you need any help try looking at the sites on Goggle Earth, I always do that before a trip and it helps me with those side trips you may want to take. California is full of beautiful places to visit so have fun and enjoy your time, just remember it's very hot nowadays so sun block and sunglasses are a must!!

I went from San Francisco to San Diego once. It's a good trip. From San Francisco to L.A. there's a lot of beautiful nothing. But two good stopping points I remember are Pebble Beach and Hearst Castle.

Pebble Beach has many stunningly elegant coastal homes. We took a 17 mile scenic drive through, and they do charge you a bit, but it's a pleasant change of scenery on a long road trip.

We took a tour of Hearst Castle, which is very over the top and gaudy, but incredibly fascinating if you know its history. I would recommend watching the film "Citizen Kane" and the documentary "The American Experience" before you go. They don't mention "Citizen Kane" on the tour at all, and you'll understand why after watching the documentary.California road trip from San Francisco to San Diego. If you have a overnight stop. .... The Bella Maggiore, is Downtown Ventura. Very nice easy town. Santa Barbra is a nice town to stroll and hang out too. I remember a nice camp area for tents going out of Santa Barbra heading to Ojai.

Traveled the area one and a half years ago. Stayed at the Bella Maggiore for a week. Highly recommend.
