I plan to go to the Golden Gate Bridge, go to Alcatraz, go to Lombard St., go to the wharf, go see the oakland a's by taking the BART since the giants aren't in town. There is one who sits at Pier 39 (also a great place to visit)...and he sits behind bushes and scares people when they walk by! It's funny as heck! He is the famous bush man! Take the Ferry from Fisherman's Wharf to Saucelito.
You're basically hitting a lot of the tourist attractions. Living in the bay area my entire life has shown me the best thing about the city is it's fabulous food and night life. My advice, eat as much as you can while there. If you see a dumpy hole in the wall, try it - I'm sure it'll be awesome.

If you have a whole day, go to Golden Gate Park. Start at the beach and just walk ... the park is four long blocks wide and extremely long. There are many different things you can see in the park, from a herd of buffalo to windmills to several different museums ... art, science, etc. When you get to the 'city end' of the park, look at the northern side of that end, and there's another park, called The Panhandle. Walk that and you can see the wonderful Victorian houses and other buildings. Take a picnic or eat at the Japanese Garden tea house in the park. See if you can't find the George Moscone playground (adults allowed only with children) and the wonderful carousel. Have a wonderful time in S.F. It's my FAVORITE city in the whole world, and Golden Gate park is my favorite place in the city and it's not to be missed!
i went to pier 39 and got my head stuck in the merry go round so they had to close it and put a new one in. i try to avoid that now. there is a movie theater with the largest indoor theater screen in the nation. and by the way. i was seven when the merry go round thing happened. :%26gt;
If you are going north at all there is Bodega bay with a great beach and of course it's where the birds was shot by Hitchcock. There is Marine world Africa USA in Vallejo, I believe they still have a cable car ride, Balloon rides, Lots of good theater. If you are only going for a week or so you won't have enough time to see it all. Go to the open air market near UC Berkley if you want to see some diverse culture. Enjoy the trip!
Good choice going to an A's game! The Giants ballpark is actually really nice though so you should atleast walk by there and check it out. The zoo sucks anyway, you're not missing much. Go to Baker Beach, it's a beautiful beach and the weather this week is in the 80s. Go to Ocean Beach, you can even have bonfires there at night. Have fun, it's the best city in the world!

I want to create an itinerary for the short period of two complete weekdays (and the first evening) in San Francisco.
These are the places/things I'd like to do:

the market (I forgot the name) where so many vendors have all sorts of fresh foods-Embarcadero?

I want to see the Golden Gate bridge and Alcatraz, but don't want to tie up too much time for the actual tour where one goes inside- a water tour maybe?
the victorian homes -Is it the Painted Ladies?

Along the way you will see Fisherman's Wharf and where you would take a ferry to Alcatraz, were you to want to do that. In lieu of this, you can take a bay tour on a boat that goes around Alcatraz and beneath the Golden Gate Bridge and back. I would do this the same day you see Fisherman's Wharf and Ghiradelli Square.

For dinner one night, head to Divisidero St. where you will be able to walk up to see the painted ladies in Alamo Square. Go early in the evening when the sun is still shining, and realize that all times of the year it will be cold at night, even in the summer. Our son lives in the Bay Area, so we get out there once a year. Our experience is that you can 'do' the downtown sights in one day. That would include Ghiradelli Square, Fisherman's Wharf, and the Ferry Building. Actually, you can walk from Ghiradelli Square to the Ferry Building in about an hour - but if you stop along the way to shop or eat, plan on more time. From Union Square, you can get a cable car that takes you to Fisherman's Wharf - get off at Lombard Street, (at the top of the hill), take your picture, and then walk the rest of the way to the waterfront. The Painted Ladies are further out.
Alcatraz is an island, so you have to take a ferry to get there. You need to allow 3-4 hours just for Alcatraz. The ferry leaves from the Pier 39 area of Fisherman's Wharf, so you might be able to combine that with some other downtown activities in one day. Be sure to book your trip in advance - you can do it on line up to 90 days before you plan to be there. If you wait, you will have to stand in line for space-available tickets and that could be all day.
You can see the Golden Gate bridge from Fisherman's Wharf. or from the Alcatraz ferry And the fact that you are relying on public transportation means that unless you want to mortgage a lot of time for a tour, you probably will need to be satisfied with that vista.

San Francisco Trip in April!!?
Just wanted to get peoples opinions on some things we plan on doing in San Francisco for 4 days. Any advice on what more we should do is welcomed. Well we will be staying at the Embassy Suites on Gateway in S. S.F. We have 3 kids so a suite is a must. How far is that from anything? Also we plan on taking the double decker around town, going to Muir Woods...how interesting is that? And of course my husband wants to visit Alcatraz. Sould we do the night tour or is the others just as good. My kids aren't easily frightened so the spookier the better for me.San Francisco Trip in April!!?

There's a subway station in South San Francisco (as well as a Caltrain commuter rail station with less frequent service) that will take you to the city center. But with three kids, I wouldn't recommend it. You'll probably want to get a rental car.
Muir Woods is a must-see. Some of the trees are 2,000 years old and as tall as office buildings. It's absolutely spectacular. If your kids remember Return of the Jedi, some of the Endor scenes were shot here.
For adults, Alcatraz rarely dissapoints. The entire prison is a form of psychological torture. Imagine seeing the bright lights of San Francisco every night (and sometimes the sound of freedom, such as during the 4th of July fireworks)... so close, yet so far away. Kids might find the history a little thick though. But the tour departs from Fisherman's Wharf, so you can always bribe the kids with promises of midway games and video arcades back on the mainland.
Other family friendly attractions include:
The Exploratorium -- The premier science museum (at least until the Museum of Natural History in Golden Gate Park finishes a massive 300 million dollar renovation).

Muir Woods is great and you will want a car for that. I have not been to Alcatraz at night. I know it is a good tour during the day. There is a lot to do: Golden Gate Park, Japanese Tea Gardens, Buffalo Paddock, watch the sun set from the Beach Chalet (reservations very helpful). Take a ferry to Angel Island and check out the old buildings (the west coast Ellis Island). Maybe purchase a SF tour book.San Francisco Trip in April!!?

What do you think about the Psychology program at San Francisco State University and CSU Sacramento?
I applied to both of these universities and would like to know some of your opinions. I know that the psychology program at SFSU is impacted. Is that a reason for me to prefer going to CSU Sacramento? I look at the CSUS'S website and they don't have many different psych classes per semester... Please, let me know some of the pros and cons of these programs. Honest answers from people who have experience in these universities would be much appreciated!
Also, how about UC Berkeley? I know the course is also impacted there. As far as prestige goes, I'm not interested because I'm going back to Brazil and that is not going to matter there. But would I really receive a better education from UCB than the CSUs. Another things that worries me at UCB are: huge classes with 300+ students; the fact that I can't talk to professors because they have so many students and are busy with research; I've heard that it gets really competitive there. If someone could talk honestly a bit about that, I would appreciate.

Psychology is one of the most popular majors in spite of the fact there are essentially no jobs for a person with a bachelor's degree in Psychology.
You can only realistically expect to make a living in this field if you get a PhD so you can set yourself up in private practice as a Psychologist. To do this you have to graduate from your bachelors program with a GPA of at least 3.0. If you think you can do this and commit yourself to at least 4 years of additional schooling after you get your bachelors, then great.
But if you do not think you will get at least a 3.0 or do not intend to stay in school past your bachelors degree then you should consider a different field. There are vastly more people with a bachelors degree in psychology that there is anything resembling enough jobs for them.
Since you need a PhD and once you have a PhD no one really cares where you got your bachelors, just go to the place you can go for the cheapest, generally your closest state university, as an in state student. A less competitive school is best as you will end up with a better GPA. A high GPA from a less competitive school is better than a mediocre GPA from a competitive school. Save your money for grad school and your PhD.
If you do not want to pursue a masters in Psychology, you can also go into a masters program in a lot of other areas or to law school as well.
People with only an undergrad degree in psychology and who actually got a job that had anything to do with the degree made a starting salary of $36,000 per year on average in 2009 according to:

Also, how about UC Berkeley? I know the course is also impacted there. As far as prestige goes, I'm not interested because I'm going back to Brazil and that is not going to matter there. But would I really receive a better education from UCB than the CSUs. Another things that worries me at UCB are: huge classes with 300+ students; the fact that I can't talk to professors because they have so many students and are busy with research; I've heard that it gets really competitive there. If someone could talk honestly a bit about that, I would appreciate.
